India's headline consumer price inflation accelerated to 5.54% in September, up from 4.82% in August, surpassing the 5.40% average expected by economists in a Reuters poll. The figure marks a 22-month high and extends a streak of rising prices to 11 consecutive months in the world's fastest-growing economy. The Reserve Bank of India faces increased pressure to maintain a tight monetary policy stance as domestic costs climb.

India's Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation reported the data in a Monday release, highlighting significant increases in specific sectors. Food inflation jumped to 7.74% from 5.97% the previous month, with price growth outpacing urban rates in rural areas. Transport services for goods saw inflation rise to 14.73%, while personal transport costs increased by 7.46%.

These developments follow the Reserve Bank of India's earlier decision this month to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023. The central bank joined other major global institutions in tightening policy to curb accelerating inflation, stating that further rate cuts are off the table in the near term and that future actions could involve either hikes or pauses.

External factors continue to influence India's economic outlook. The country imports nearly 85% of its fuel needs and previously relied heavily on energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, making it vulnerable to supply disruptions from the Iran war. Oil prices remain elevated due to Middle East tensions, with experts predicting continued volatility in the near term amid concerns over the conflict and the impact of Hurricane Isaias.

The Reserve Bank of India projects core inflation at 4.4% and headline inflation at 5.2% for the financial year ending March 2027, a level above its medium-term target of 4%. Despite raising its economic growth estimate by 40 basis points to 7.1%, the central bank cautioned that protracted geopolitical tensions, trade frictions, tightening financial conditions, and elevated international commodity prices are likely to weigh on economic activity.

Domestic agricultural risks also persist. The India Meteorological Department recorded rainfall from June to September as the fourth lowest since 2001 and the 13th driest since 1901. This period is critical for rain-fed farms and reservoirs, with parts of key farm states including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana facing extreme drought conditions linked to the Super El Nino.

HSBC analysts noted in an October 7 report that they expect another rate hike in December, following the recent policy action. The bank described the situation as a tightening cycle rather than a deep one, adding that the September data was likely to show a sizeable headline pop.
