Hurricane Isaias damages Florida Panhandle and Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday, Oct. 9. The storm hit as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It brought destructive winds, dangerous storm surge and widespread flooding to the region. Emergency crews and residents are currently assessing the damage. Homes have torn roofs. Trees are uprooted. Roads are flooded. The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers across Florida and Alabama. This happened before the system moved inland and weakened. This event marks the first hurricane to make landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast since Hurricane Milton struck Florida in October 2024. It is also the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, following a period where no hurricanes developed until October. Photos from the hardest-hit areas show the scale of the destruction as cleanup operations begin. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has deployed resources to clear roads and restore power in the affected areas.
