Trade Desk Stock Sits Above 2018 Support Levels Amid Slowing Revenue
Trade Desk (TTD) shares closed at $13.13 on October 15, positioning the stock above price levels that historically triggered significant rallies. The company reported that revenue growth slowed to 3% in the June quarter, a sharp deceleration from the 18.7% growth recorded during the same period a year earlier. Management acknowledged during an August 6 earnings call that this growth rate fell below the company's own expectations, citing economic conditions that have made it harder for large brands to expand their advertising spend.
The current valuation reflects these headwinds. Trade Desk shares have lost 74.1% of their value over the past year, while the S&P 500 returned 17.9%. Investors are currently paying a multiple of 15.1 times the last twelve months of earnings, compared to a multiple of 22.7 for the broader market index. Despite the slowdown in top-line growth, the company remains profitable, though operating margins have compressed. The operating margin for the June quarter stood at 14.2%, down from 16.8% in the prior year period.
Historical price action offers mixed signals for current holders. In 2018, rallies began when shares hit levels between $11.61 and $12.57 in August, October, and December. Those moves advanced to a high of $27.86 in July 2019, delivering a typical gain of 139.6%. More recent tests of this support zone in 2026 played out differently. The stock returned to these levels on August 10 and September 22, 2026. On both occasions, shares fell 5% before rising 20%. Following the second instance, shares closed at $11.92 on October 6 before recovering to the current level with a 7.8% rise on October 15.
Technical resistance levels present a more modest near-term target than historical peaks. The immediate resistance sits at $19.56, a price where a rally stalled once in the past two years. If shares reach that level, $10,000 invested today would be worth approximately $14,900. By comparison, the typical 2018 bounce would have increased that same sum to about $23,960. On the path to that resistance, the stock would need to pass $15.09, another level where a prior rally stalled.
Management indicated that most of the company's top 100 accounts continued to grow by double digits year-over-year during the August call. They also noted that Audience Unlimited, a product moving to open beta, was showing very encouraging results. However, the company guided for revenue of at least $650 million for the September quarter, compared to $739 million in the same quarter a year earlier, assuming no meaningful improvement in economic conditions.
Advertisers in the consumer packaged goods and auto sectors account for around 25% of Trade Desk's business. Management stated that these sectors have been set back by tariffs and oil prices. If the stock breaks down again from its current level, the next support sits at the October 6 close of $11.92, which represents a decline of 9.2% from today's price and marks the lowest close in two years.
Trade Desk is expected to report earnings on or around November 5, 2026. The key metric for investors will be September quarter revenue weighed against the company's guidance of at least $650 million.
