StockStory identified Old Second Bancorp (NASDAQ: OSBC) as a growth stock to add to a portfolio while recommending investors avoid Compass (NYSE: COMP) and Reinsurance Group of America (NYSE: RGA). The analysis highlights Old Second Bancorp's recent financial performance against the broader challenges faced by the other two companies.

Old Second Bancorp, an Illinois-based community bank operating since 1871, reported one-year revenue growth of 30.2%. The bank offers deposit services, commercial and consumer loans, wealth management, and mortgage products through 53 branch locations. According to StockStory, the company’s market share increased during the current cycle, supported by 29.2% annual net interest income growth over the last five years. The firm attributes this performance to a high-yielding loan book and a low cost of funds, which produced a net interest margin of 5%. Non-interest operating profits and efficiency also rose over the five-year period due to fixed cost leverage. Old Second Bancorp’s stock price of $24.86 implies a valuation ratio of 1.3x forward price-to-book.

In contrast, StockStory advises avoiding Compass, a digital-first residential real estate brokerage in the United States. Compass reported one-year revenue growth of 67.8%. However, the company’s annual sales growth of 14% over the last five years lagged behind consumer discretionary peers. StockStory notes that Compass’s large revenue base made it difficult to generate incremental demand. The analysis also cites historical operating margin losses as evidence of an inefficient cost structure. Furthermore, the lack of free cash flow generation limits the company’s ability to reinvest for growth, repurchase shares, or distribute capital. Compass is trading at $9.33 per share, or 9.2x forward price-to-earnings.

Reinsurance Group of America, which has provided life and health reinsurance services since 1973, is the second stock StockStory recommends avoiding. The company reported one-year revenue growth of 19.3%. StockStory identifies outsized scale as a growth headwind, noting that its 1.3% annualized net premiums earned increase over the last two years underperformed other financial institutions. The firm argues that scale limits capital growth potential compared to smaller competitors, reflected in below-average annual book value per share increases of 1.2% for the last five years. A forecasted book value per share decline of 8.1% for the upcoming 12 months implies significant profitability deterioration. Reinsurance Group of America trades at $264.27 per share, or 1.2x forward price-to-book.
