AMD Margin Hits 17.3% as Stock Trades at 22.6x Sales

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported an operating margin of 17.3% for the quarter ending June 2026, a figure that stands in sharp contrast to the valuation of the S&P 500. With AMD shares trading at 22.6 times sales, the company's ability to convert revenue into profit has become the central metric for investors assessing the stock's current premium. The margin represents a significant recovery from the prior year, when AMD posted an operating loss equal to 1.7% of its sales in the quarter ending June 2025. The company attributed that deficit to approximately $800 million in inventory and related charges linked to U.S. export restrictions on its MI308 chip shipments to China.

The trajectory of AMD's profitability has not been linear. Following the loss quarter, which was the only operating deficit in the last five quarters, the margin fluctuated before reaching a low of 13.7% in the quarter ending September 2025. Since June, AMD has expanded its operations through acquisitions, agreeing to buy Taalas, a startup producing inference chips, and World Labs, an AI laboratory, in an all-stock transaction. The financial impact of these deals on the operating margin has not yet materialized, and the company has not provided specific projections for how they will affect future profitability.

Over the twelve months ending June 2026, AMD's operating margin of 15.7% lagged behind the S&P 500's 18.5%. However, AMD has demonstrated faster revenue growth, averaging 24.4% annually over its last three twelve-month periods compared to 5.9% for the index. When measured across full yearly intervals, AMD's margin shows a consistent upward trend. It stood at 3.7% from July 2023 to June 2024, rose to 8.3% in the subsequent twelve months, and increased again in the most recent period.

The stock's performance highlights both its strength and its volatility. AMD shares returned 163.8% over the twelve months leading up to October 14, 2026, vastly outpacing the S&P 500's 17.3% gain. This surge follows a history of deeper drawdowns during market shocks; during the 2022 inflation event, AMD fell 63% while the S&P 500 ETF dropped 24%, and during the 2025 tariff shock, AMD declined 32% against a 19% index drop. The current valuation implies that the market expects continued margin improvement to justify the price premium.

Investors will look to AMD's next earnings report, scheduled for on or around November 3, 2026, to determine if the company can sustain its margin gains while expanding sales. The operating margin remains the key indicator for whether the current stock price aligns with fundamental performance.
