Virginia senator indicted for alleged marijuana distribution enterprise

Virginia state senator Lillie Louise Lucas was indicted Thursday on five federal charges, including drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and firearms offenses, following allegations that she led a marijuana distribution enterprise, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The indictment names seven individuals in total, a group that includes Lucas's two daughters, Lisa Lucas Burke and Theresa Lucas Lamb, and her grandson, Ryan Eichelberger. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the charges during a Thursday press conference. In a statement released by the Department of Justice, Blanche noted that Lucas has held a position of public trust in the Commonwealth of Virginia for over three decades. He stated that the charges reveal the alleged behavior of a public servant who prioritized personal financial interests over the people she was elected to serve. Blanche added that federal prosecutors will continue to be guided by the facts and evidence that led a grand jury to indict Lucas and her alleged co-conspirators. Lucas, who is 82 years old, has served as a Virginia state senator since 1991. Since 2020, she has held the position of president pro tempore of the state senate, serving as the presiding member in the absence of the lieutenant governor. Additionally, she has chaired the state's Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee since 2024. Blanche reiterated in his Thursday remarks that Lucas's first duty should have been to look out for her constituents before herself. The Department of Justice stated that Lucas led what it called the Lucas Enterprise with a close-knit group of friends and family, including her two daughters and grandson. FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement that this group orchestrated a multi-year scheme to enrich their own criminal marijuana enterprise. Patel claimed the group leveraged Lucas's role as committee chair to shield the operation from law enforcement investigation and to shape laws for personal financial gain. The Department of Justice reported that Lucas was directly involved in a wide range of activities within the enterprise. These activities included the acquisition and distribution of at least 100 kilograms of marijuana and the laundering of proceeds from drug sales.
