Tulsa's David Wells Jr. tips ball to himself for improbable touchdown in wild play against Navy

Tulsa quarterback Baylor Hayes threw a backward pass to wide receiver Oran Singleton Jr. during a Saturday game at Navy, leading to a touchdown scored by David Wells Jr. after Singleton was stuffed behind the line of scrimmage. The play occurred with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, when the score was tied at 7 and Tulsa was positioned at the Navy 10-yard line. Singleton escaped a tackle and threw a floating pass into coverage, where Wells Jr. tipped the ball backward to himself outside the end zone, caught it, and ran back into the end zone for the score. The Golden Hurricane later built a lead when Singleton caught a separate touchdown pass, giving Tulsa a 26-14 advantage early in the second half. Navy, which finished last season 11-2 and won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy by defeating Air Force and Army, entered the game with more losses than it recorded across the entire previous campaign. Tulsa began the season with a 3-2 record following a 4-8 finish last year. The matchup was part of a broader Saturday slate featuring two SEC games described as some of the sport's best rivalries.
