President Donald Trump expressed optimism regarding the recovery of Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday, following the pontiff's diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during a flight from Arizona to Montana, the president discussed the medical outcome and his personal connection to the pope's family. The Vatican confirmed the diagnosis one day prior, after surgeons at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome removed the lower lobe of Leo's right lung.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a procedure lasting approximately 90 minutes, during which doctors collected tissue samples. The Holy See Press Office stated that the examination of this tissue confirmed the presence of lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. This finding was consistent with tests conducted before the surgery. Doctors reported that the operation proceeded without complications. Leo had previously disclosed that medical staff discovered a small lump in his lung at an early stage and recommended surgical intervention. Following the operation, the pope awoke normally and returned to his hospital room after a brief observation period.

During his remarks, Trump described the prognosis as good, noting that cancer is a serious condition but that he wishes the pope a speedy recovery. "I want to see Pope Leo get well," Trump said. "I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It's a cancer. It's big stuff. Anytime you have cancer." He added that the current outlook appears positive and that he wanted to convey love and best wishes.

The president also detailed his relationship with the pope's brother and his wife, identifying them as enthusiastic supporters of his political movement. Trump described the brother as a friend and a fantastic person, noting that his wife and he are major supporters of Trump. "They have MAGA all over their house," Trump said. He emphasized the brother's deep affection for the pope, stating that the brother loves him a lot. Trump concluded by reiterating his desire for Leo to get better fast.

The Vatican's announcement highlighted that the cancer diagnosis was confirmed through post-surgical tissue analysis. The Holy See noted that the findings aligned with pre-procedure tests, validating the initial recommendation for surgery to remove part of the right lung. The pontiff remains in recovery following the successful removal of the affected tissue.
