Spotify confirms QR code check for Family Plan members

Spotify co-CEO Alex Norstrom stated on the company's earnings call that the streaming service is implementing a new verification method for its Family plan. The update requires users to scan a QR code from the plan manager's phone to confirm eligibility. In response to media inquiries about whether this constitutes a crackdown, Norstrom characterized the change as a routine improvement to existing verification procedures. TechCrunch reported the details of his comments during the call. The executive noted that the Family plan has been part of Spotify's offerings for a significant period, estimating its duration at close to 12 or 13 years. He emphasized that the primary goal is to identify accounts where members do not reside in the same household, ensuring the service aligns with its intended usage terms.
