The stock's rally occurred against a backdrop of heightened sector attention. On Wednesday, the PHP Foundation disclosed two critical flaws in PHP, the programming language that powers nearly 70% of websites, and released an emergency patch. Researchers indicated that they identified these bugs partially using an OpenAI model. In response, Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora appeared on the TBPN podcast on Wednesday afternoon to warn that the frequency of such discoveries would increase. Arora stated, "We’re gonna see more of these, not less." He noted that internal scans at Palo Alto Networks identified 22 million instances where the specific PHP flaw persists. Arora added that vulnerabilities missed by current AI models would likely be detected by subsequent models within three months.
Market data from TIKR indicates that 56 analysts track Palo Alto Networks. Analysts project the company's revenue to increase from $11.5 billion in fiscal 2026, the year ending in July 2026, to $16.2 billion in fiscal 2028. Deutsche Bank observed that the market has already incorporated these potential benefits into valuations to varying degrees. At Wednesday's close, Palo Alto Networks traded at 83 times forward earnings, a multiple significantly higher than its five-year average of 57 times. Following Thursday's price jump, the valuation multiple approached 87 times. Historical data shows the stock reached 101 times forward earnings in August and fell as low as 38 times in February, illustrating significant volatility in investor sentiment regarding the company.
The next quarterly report is expected next month. This release will be the first financial report issued since the disclosure of the PHP flaws. The upcoming report provides a test for whether the company can meet or exceed the revenue and earnings estimates that underpin its current valuation.
