SEOUL, July 28. The 60-day correlation between South Korea's Kospi and the Nasdaq 100 recently climbed to about 0.50, its highest level since 2021, according to data provided by Rayliant. The figure reflects a tightening between Wall Street's technology-heavy benchmark and Seoul's broad equity index.
The Rayliant figures
Correlation runs from negative one to positive one. At negative one, two assets move in exact opposition; at positive one, they move in lockstep. At approximately 0.50, the Kospi and Nasdaq 100 sit in moderate positive territory on a 60-day look-back, meaning the two indexes have tended to move in the same direction over that period, the data shows. The last time the pair reached this level was 2021, Rayliant reported.
The 60-day window smooths daily noise. A reading of this magnitude sustained across two months reflects structural co-movement, not a handful of correlated sessions pulling the figure higher.
Consequences for cross-regional portfolios
Investors who hold both Korean equities and U.S. large-cap technology exposure assume less diversification benefit when the two markets move in closer alignment. At 0.50, the mutual offset each position provides the other is narrower than at any point since 2021, the Rayliant data shows.
The correlation figure alone does not identify what is driving the alignment. Rayliant provided the data. The Nasdaq 100 tracks 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq. The Kospi is South Korea's primary equity benchmark, covering companies listed on the Korea Exchange.
