Cowboys hire retired coach Mike Pettine to aid struggling defense

The Dallas Cowboys have hired former NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, a move intended to address the team's defensive deficiencies during the 2026 season. Pettine, who had retired before the current campaign began, is joining the staff to work alongside defensive coordinator Christian Parker following a home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football. The defeat dropped the Cowboys' record to 2-3 and highlighted statistical struggles that have persisted since the previous year. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated that the organization had discussed the possibility of bringing Pettine in for some time, emphasizing that the decision was driven by the need for trusted experience to support the existing coaching structure. Parker, who is 34 years old and made his first hiring decisions for the position in January, initially approached Pettine about joining his staff. The two have a professional history dating back to 2019, when Parker served as a quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers under Pettine, who was then the team's defensive coordinator. Schottenheimer also noted a prior working relationship with Pettine from their time on Rex Ryan's New York Jets staff. Pettine's recent resume includes roles as an assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2022 through last season and as a senior defensive assistant for the Chicago Bears during the 2021 season. The Cowboys do not intend for Pettine to replace Parker; rather, the arrangement is designed to allow the two to collaborate to improve on-field results. The defensive unit has allowed the second-most yards per game in the NFL at 395.4, trailing only the Detroit Lions. Additionally, Dallas ranks last in run defense, surrendering 168.4 yards per game, and is 26th in points allowed per game at 27.2. Offensively, the team has managed to stay competitive largely due to quarterback Dak Prescott and an offense that ranks seventh in points per game at 27.6. Schottenheimer explained that trust between the coordinator and the new assistant is essential for effective communication and feedback. The Cowboys will test this new dynamic in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers during Sunday Night Football.
