Constellation Brands Pivots To Marketing As Beer Sales Recover
Constellation Brands management shifted its strategic emphasis from consumer economic anxiety to internal marketing investment during its fiscal Q2 2027 earnings call on October 7, 2026. The company reported that its increased marketing efforts contributed to it becoming the largest gainer in beverage alcohol dollar share for the quarter. This marks a distinct departure from the narrative presented on the fiscal Q2 2026 call, where management highlighted that 80% of surveyed Hispanic and non-Hispanic consumers expressed concern about the socioeconomic environment.
The beer segment remains the dominant driver of the company’s financial performance, generating $8.32 billion in revenue during fiscal 2026. This figure represented 91.0% of total company revenue, although beer sales declined by 2.6% year over year, following a 4.6% increase in fiscal 2025. Management indicated that the Pacifico brand, now a top 10 beer brand, is growing at approximately 20%. Overall company revenue reversed a previous decline, rising 6.1% year over year to $2.63 billion in fiscal Q2 2027, after falling 3.3% in fiscal Q1 2027.
To support this recovery, Constellation Brands is increasing its marketing expenditures, which management stated had likely been underspent in the preceding years. The company expects marketing to account for approximately 10% of net sales in the second half of fiscal 2027, with spending rising above 11% in fiscal Q3 2027 to cover Major League Baseball and NCAA football campaigns. Concurrently, management projects beer operating margins of 34.5% to 35.5% for the second half of fiscal 2027.
Despite these positive quarterly indicators, the broader revenue picture remains mixed. Over the twelve months ending August 2026, total revenue decreased by 4.3% compared to the prior year. Management attributed part of the recent growth to rebuilding distributor inventory levels, noting that the company had to ship product during the quarter to clear backlogs accumulated during the first half of the year. Additionally, the wine and spirits segment saw sales drop by 50.6% in fiscal 2026 following the partial divestiture of that business.
The macroeconomic backdrop continues to influence pricing strategies, with pricing net of mix remaining roughly flat in fiscal Q2 2027. Management described its pricing actions as selective due to the current economic conditions. Investors will look to the next earnings report, scheduled for on or around January 5, 2027, to determine if the revenue growth trend persists. Constellation Brands currently trades at a multiple of 11.6 times earnings over the past twelve months, compared to 22.9 for the S&P 500.
