Axios is deploying a new AI system to support local journalism and launching a business unit that sells direct news feeds to companies building large language models. The media company stated it is making a series of investments to adapt to the changing role of artificial intelligence in media consumption.
The company plans to unveil an Axios Local "Super System" that uses AI to track government action, community data, and upcoming events. Axios said this technology will provide its 100-plus local journalists with more time for reporting. The outlet stated it hopes the system will allow it to hire journalists in hundreds or thousands of communities, aiming to revitalize the local news industry.
Axios is also launching products tailored to specific job titles, starting with verticals for CEOs, CMOs, CCOs, COOs, and CFOs. The company noted that job roles are changing rapidly and that understanding AI through the lens of specific professions is becoming vital. These products are designed for current users and the anticipated shift toward large language models.
A new business line called Axios Direct will sell clean, real-time feeds of verified news to businesses. Companies are building their own large language models and paying to ingest high-quality reporting, which creates a new revenue stream. Axios stated that third-party data shows its format helps it overperform in AI results. The company is also working with other organizations to restructure their content to be more compatible with large language models.
The outlet is expanding its physical events, including dinners and meet-ups, based on the belief that demand for human connection will increase as AI improves. The Axios Social Club recently brought together more than 1,300 readers in 40 Axios Local markets for dinner with neighbors. Axios stated that reporters remain essential for gathering leaks, understanding source nuance, and demanding accountability.
Axios projects that by 2028, it will have the widest journalistic presence in America and serve as the most trusted human source of verified news. By 2030, the company anticipates that content consumption will be fully personalized by AI and new devices, with the shift from the open web to large language models complete. The company stated that media has a short window to adapt as the velocity of change intensifies.
